Bridges

What are they?

A bridge is a prosthetic tooth (called the pontic) fixed to the adjacent teeth via crowns.

There are three main types of bridge

Traditional fixed bridges

This is the most common type of bridge. The pontic is attached to two crowns which are then fitted to the teeth either side of the gap.

Cantilever bridges

These are used when there are only teeth on one side of the space to be filled.

Maryland bonded (or resin-bonded) bridges

In this instance the prosthetic tooth has metal wings on the back which are bonded to the inside of the adjacent teeth.

What is the procedure?

First the teeth either side of the gap are prepared. A mould is taken and a temporary bridge is fitted to protect the prepared teeth. On your next visit the proper bridge will be fitted.

How long do they last?

Around 10 years.
